Travel trade & B2B resources
Banteay Meanchey sits on the main overland route between Bangkok and Angkor. This is the trade desk for tour operators, wholesalers, boutique retailers, media and event organisers who want to build the province into itineraries properly — and sell it honestly.
What you are selling
Use these figures in your own collateral. They are the numbers the tourism office maintains for trade and media use.
Buildable modules
Each of these runs as a standalone half-day or can be combined into a 2–4 day provincial programme. Distances and timings are the ones the community operators actually work to.
Banteay Chhmar temple complex
Guided walk of the face-towers, the multi-armed Avalokiteshvara reliefs and the walled city. Community guides only; the site is unprotected and fragile, so group sizes are managed.
- Capacity
- Up to 25 per guide
- Fee
- ~USD 15 temple pass + guide
- Access
- Sealed road to the village
Sarus Crane watching
Strictly seasonal, January to April. Dawn departure with community wardens and spotting scopes. Groups of more than 8 require two vehicles and two wardens.
- Start
- 05:00 departure, fixed
- Fee
- ~USD 35 per person
- Access
- Laterite road; 4x4 advised
Golden silk workshop & sourcing
Hands-on weaving and natural dye demonstration, with the option of a trade appointment with the weaving co-operative. Sample books are available in Siem Reap and at the annual silk expo.
- Capacity
- Max 6 per workshop session
- Fee
- ~USD 20 per person
- Trade
- Direct supply, no intermediary
Community homestay programme
Traditional wooden houses, family meals, ox-cart sunset and a morning temple walk. The community sets the bed limit; groups must book ahead and cannot be expanded on arrival.
- Capacity
- Limited beds — confirm early
- Fee
- From USD 12 per night
- Facilities
- Shared bathroom, mosquito nets
Market, food walk & cooking class
Covered-market sourcing walk, then hands-on cooking of amok, prahok and num banh chok. Works well for families and as a wet-weather substitute for outdoor modules.
- Capacity
- 2–12 participants
- Fee
- ~USD 25 per person
- Timing
- Morning; evening walk alternative
Khmer classical dance & pinpeat
Provincial fine arts troupe performing Apsara and Reamker repertoire with a live pinpeat ensemble. Arranged on request for groups of six or more, usually at a pagoda or community hall.
- Capacity
- Minimum 6, no fixed maximum
- Fee
- From USD 250 per performance
- Notice
- 2 weeks preferred
Three itineraries that already work
These shapes have been run repeatedly and hold up against real driving times. Adapt them, but keep the district grouping — the province is wider than it looks on a map.
2 days — Heritage core
Day 1: arrive Poipet or Siem Reap, transfer to Banteay Chhmar, afternoon temple walk, ox-cart sunset, homestay dinner. Day 2: sunrise temple walk, satellite temple Ta Prohm, Phnom Srok silk villages en route back, evening in Serei Saophoan.
3 days — Heritage & wildlife
Adds a pre-dawn Sarus Crane watch at Ang Trapeang Thmor (January to April) and a market-cooking experience in the capital, with an extra night in Serei Saophoan.
5 days — Northwest loop
Extends into Battambang on the joint Northwest Heritage Route: colonial architecture, Phare Ponleu Selpak and the Bamboo Train, returning via the Tonle Sap floodplain communities.
Golden silk, direct from the weavers
The Phnom Srok co-operative sells directly to boutiques, hotels, designers and exporters — cutting out intermediaries and raising weaver income substantially.

Selling points you can use honestly
The crowd argument
Banteay Chhmar is a temple complex of Angkorian scale with visitor numbers in the hundreds rather than the millions. That is a genuine differentiator for travellers who have already done Angkor — and for anyone who actively avoids crowds.
The route argument
The province sits directly on the Bangkok–Siem Reap overland corridor via Poipet. Converting a transit stop into one or two nights is straightforward, and it breaks up a long drive for independent travellers.
The impact argument
Community tourism revenue here reaches more than 200 households and funds schools, water filters and temple maintenance. This is verifiable and specific — clients increasingly ask for exactly this.
The honesty argument
Be straight with clients: roads are partly laterite, accommodation outside the capital is homestay-only and basic, and the crane season is strictly January to April. Well-briefed travellers rate this province highly; badly briefed ones do not.
Let’s build the programme together.
Send us your client profile, dates and rough budget. We will come back with a suggested itinerary, realistic timings, licensed suppliers and the constraints you need to know about before you quote.
